Arsenal Ladies Football Club of London pulled one of the unusual. They did what the men team rarely does. The lady gunners bought outrightly, a player that gave them the biggest threat in a previous season from obviously an arch rival.

The Pedro Martinez Losa tutored Arsenal Ladies snatched the current African Female Footballer of The Year, Asisat Oshoala, away from the employment Liverpool Ladies Football Club. It was Sir Alex Ferguson that had the penchant of poaching players like that during his trophy-laden years at Manchester United FC.

Skillful Asisat Oshoala scored the third and final goal for the Liverpool Ladies, against the Arsenal Ladies in the final match of the Football Association Women’s Super League (FA WSL). She had joined The Reds at Anfield previous summer in a transfer that made fans of the star and female football in Nigeria happy. Just a season at Anfield and the move to the Emirates came out of the blues. She said, “It is a dream comes true for me”.

In the past, Nigeria had dominated the African female football for many years winning trophies at both senior and junior levels. The Super Falcons, as the senior national team is nicknamed, had legendary players like Perpetual Nkwocha, Florence Omagbemi, Ann Chiejine, Mercy Akide, Gift Otuwe, Nkiru Okosieme, Kikelemo Ajayi, just to mention a few.

Those great players bestrode the African terrain like giants and took away trophies and individual laurels. They even took their football talents and skills abroad for professional contracts. However, the best from them were at Scandinavian countries like Sweden, Denmark or Norway. Well, a few of them did play in the USA.

Lucky Asisat Oshoala, she has broken that jinx. She moved to and started playing in the England, the traditional home of the game of football. Not stopping from there, she moved from one big club, Liverpool LFC to another bigger one, Arsenal LFC, within just two seasons.

At Arsenal LFC, Oshoala will be learning to tow the lines of legendary female players that had put on the red and white colours of the club. There, they had Rachel Aba Yankey, who won 6 FA Women’s National Premier League trophies, 9 FA Women’s Cups, 4 FA Women’s Premier League Cups, 1 UEFA Women’s Cup and 2 FA Women Super League trophies. There were also Kelly Jayne Smith and Alexandra Virina “Alex” Scott.

To crown it, Oshoala just did the reverse a couple of days ago. After scoring against Arsenal Ladies at the end of last season to end the gunners unbeaten run, while putting on the shirts of Liverpool Ladies, she has now scored at the beginning of the new season for the Arsenal Ladies, on her debut, to possibly start another unbeaten run!

Without any doubt Asisat Oshoala, who has already won a number of trophies and individual laurels for herself is going to be a legend. She is one, already; for moving from Liverpool LFC to Arsenal LFC, very unprecedented in the history of female football in Nigeria. Ride on girl! The Nigerian fans are behind you!
